Mom's Sugar Cookies

Mom always had a large selection of Christmas cutouts, and we always had fun making sugar cookies shaped like Santa, stars, gift packages, etc.
Icing was always powdered sugar and milk, colored red or green, and we would then use various sprinkles and glitters to finish them.
1 1/2 cups butter, softened
2 cups white sugar
4 eggs
1 t vanilla extract
5 cups flour
2 t baking powder
1 t salt
In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar til smooth. Beat in eggs and vanilla. Stir in flour, baking powder and salt. Cover and chill dough for at least one hour (or overnight).

Preheat oven to 400°. Roll out dough on a floured surface til 1/4-1/2" thick. Cut into shapes. Place cookies 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets.

Bake 6 to 8 minutes or til just golden brown. Cool completely before frosting.
